Just released: the death of a ‘solidarity surgeon’ in Palestine
The first 2024 Paul K. Feyerabend Award went to five emblematic examples of solidarity in Gaza (Palestine). Among those, three persons have lost their lives because of their courage and generosity. Two of them died quickly, by a powerful blow. Dr. Adnan Al Bursh, the head of orthopaedic surgery of the main hospital in Gaza, was less fortunate. Dr. Al Bursh— a surgeon renowned for his skills and humanity— lived the storming and evacuation of Al Shifa Hospital but decided to remain to treat the wounded in smaller and smaller hospitals. He kept working under relentless bombardments and unimaginable conditions of lack of basic supplies, including water and food. Ultimately, Dr. Al Bursh was taken hostage by the Israelis and killed slowly, over many weeks of humiliation, beatings and torture.
